擁有百年歷史的「肚臍餅」據聞為日據時代苗栗糖廠一群日本技師,有感於思念家鄉和果子情懷,與當地居民共同研發出小巧好吃的「肚臍餅」,居民大都稱之為「綠豆餅」。台灣早期因物資缺乏,勤儉的客家人於是利用廉價的蕃薯磨成粉再做成餡、製成餅,專門給小朋友食用以補充營養,而因為方便嬰幼兒喜歡食用,故做成奶頭形或類似肚臍狀,也因此有人稱為奶頭餅,是客家小孩奶嘴的替代品,是客家庄經常看到的點心。現今大都稱為肚臍餅,坊間並傳說肚臍有招財之意,也能夠給小孩帶來福氣。山城苗栗伴手禮苗栗的『肚臍餅』,造型小巧可愛,口感香Q,甜而不膩,皮薄細軟,餡多酥鬆。因製法特殊,不摻油、少糖的特色,是養生輕食的最佳選擇。
